RTL Radio: Historic Finale Results In Strong Year

2018 was the third-best year in RTL Radio’s history. The radio station averaged nearly 6.5 million listeners per day. In November and December, RTL Radio reached 13.4 percent of listeners. This was not only the best ratings in its history, but a record since the current measurements were introduced.

For France’s biggest radio station, RTL Radio, 2018 was the best year in its history – after 2007 and 2017, when presidential elections were held, which always leads to a high number of listeners for the medium of radio. But in 2018, even without such an election and associated election campaign, the average number of RTL radio listeners per day last year was 6,496,000. The market share soared to 12.9 percent – the highest in ten years.

A strong finale to the year was among the decisive factors for RTL Radio’s success: In the months of November and December, RTL Radio’s market share rose to 13.4 percent of total listeners. This is not only the best ever two-month ratings for RTL Radio, but the best market share for any French radio station since the introduction of the current measurements in 2002. In absolute figures, RTL Radio had more than 6.5 million listeners per day. The average listening time was 149 minutes. With all these figures, the Groupe M6 subsidiary outdid every other French radio station.

At the end of the year, the audience growth was spread across all the station’s major formats: early in the morning from 5 a.m. to 7 a.m. “RTL Petit Matin” gained 56,000 listeners, followed by the morning magazine show “RTL Matin” with an increase of 71,000 listeners. The midday magazine show “RTL Midi” recorded an increase of 112,000 listeners. In the afternoon, the number of listeners for “Les auditeurs ont la parole” and “La curiosité est un vilain défaut” each increased their listenership by more than 130,000. And in the evening, 52,000 more listeners tuned in to “RTL Soir” than in the same period last year.

Alongside the flagship station, its smaller sister station, the music channel RTL 2, also played its part in ensuring that Groupe RTL Radio as a whole was able to successfully close the year with a market share of 19.5 percent. In the months of November and December, RTL 2 grew its average daily listenership by a total of 128,000, to 2.261 million. With a market share of 2.3 percent and 1.1 million listeners, the morning magazine show “Le double expresso RTL2” achieved the best year-end increase, growing its absolute number of listeners by 19 percent and its market share by 21 percent.
