France, Groupe M6
M6’s production of the global smash-hit format, Bake Off, is returning for its 9th season on 30 September. Season 8 of ‘Le meilleur pâtissier’ (The Best Baker) averaged 2.9 million viewers per episode and had 26% share of the audience, as such, it will air every Wednesday in the prime-time slot of 21:05. TV Chef and master baker Cyril Lignac will guide 14 amateur bakers, 7 women and 7 men, through a series of trials and tribulations in their bid to be crowned France’s best. This year’s crop ranges from 18-year-old Margaux who whipped up a storm to win the show’s preliminary competition, ‘En route pour le meilleur pâtissier’(On route to the Best Baker), to 69-year-old retiree Reine, with event managers and IT specialists to name a few in between.
The show’s placement in Wednesday’s prime-time slot and the success of lockdown innovation, ‘Tous en Cuisine’ (Everybody in the Kitchen), reflects baking’s popularity throughout the first few months of the pandemic. M6 has stipulated that baking allows us to be at one with ourselves, share things with loved ones and remember our childhood, all of which explain its rise to prominence. As such, the kitchen cemented itself at the hub of every home worldwide. ‘Tous en Cuisine’ initially used this trend to connect viewers virtually and through their shared love of cooking, now ‘Le meilleur pâtissier’ targets viewers’ sweeter tooth.
Alongside Cyril, host Julia Vignali and pastry chef Mercotte will put contestants through their paces in a series of challenges, including a battle between North and South, a chocolate shop face-off and a typical American bake off.
In addition to the weekly episodes, the format will be supported by various other medias. Cyril Lignac will give culinary advice on the RTL Matin radio show every morning at 8:55; M6 Edition, the Group’s publisher, will release a cookbook of the winner’s favourite recipes; and 6play, the Group’s on-demand platform, will contain all episodes of the preliminary series, ‘En route pour le meilleur pâtissier’, as well as all of the main series’ episodes.
