RTL to Broadcast Top International Matches Against Spain and Italy

January 30, 2020

01/24/2020, Cologne

The channel has reached an agreement with UEFA, ARD and ZDF relating to the reorganization of the distribution of broadcasting rights. Therefore, the two test matches of the German national football team against Spain on March 26 and Italy on March 31 will be broadcast by RTL.

In the first half of 2020, RTL will broadcast all four of the official test matches of the German national football team in preparation for the UEFA Euro. The Cologne based channel will therefore also broadcast the two top notch international matches against Spain on March 26 in Madrid and against Italy on March 31 in Nuremberg. UEFA, the two public broadcasters ARD and ZDF, and RTL have now reached this agreement. In return, RTL surrenders the right to broadcast two international matches, which were originally guaranteed to RTL in the original TV agreement with UEFA. A reorganization of the distribution of broadcasting rights had become necessary due to the reform of the Nations League last year. The increased number of matches in the competition this fall eliminated the two friendly matches that had been planned during the same period.

The last two preparation matches of the DFB team right before the start of the UEFA Euro are not affected by this reorganization: as planned, RTL has the exclusive broadcasting rights to the matches against Switzerland on May 31 and against a yet to be named opponent on June 8 in Sinsheim.
