Videoland Academy Selects Projects

01/21/2020, The Netherlands, Videoland

More than 150 projects were submitted for the first edition of the Videoland Academy.

Six fiction projects and three documentary series have been selected for this new talent development trajectory. The creators who will receive a financial contribution towards their projects, will meet several industry professionals and follow several workshops to further develop their projects. The final selection will follow in May. Videoland is contributing more than 1 million euro and giving new talent the opportunity to make a total of four fiction films of 45 minutes and one documentary. For this first edition (2020-2021), the themes are Grounded Sci-Fi for fiction and True Crime for the documentary series.

Antoinette Beumer, Creative Producer Fiction RTL Nederland, says: “The overwhelming number of applications has shown how many talented new filmmakers there are in the Netherlands and that this group cannot wait to develop their ideas and show them to a wide audience. The projects selected by us are innovative and each tell their own story. This promises a great start to the first Videoland Academy.”

Grounded Sci-Fi (fiction)

From romance, politics to thriller; the variation of the selected fiction projects under the theme Grounded Sci-Fi show a large range of diversity. The filmmakers fantasise under this theme on technological, sometimes biological and sometimes social developments that show the Netherlands from a different perspective.

The following filmmakers have been selected by the Videoland Academy to further develop their Grounded Sci-Fi projects:

  • Leon Golterman with Deepfake
  • Timo Ottevanger, Edson Da Conceicao, Paul de Vrijer and Wladimir van Heester with De Sterf Show
  • Jan Verdijk with De Indringer
  • Bodil Matheeuwsen with Days that I forget you
  • Daan Windhorst and Ivo van Aart with Echos
  • Jan-Willem de Kraaij and Jan Veldhuizen with Uit het Niets

True Crime selection (documentary)

The subjects of the three selected True Crime projects are controversial. Given the sensitivity of the subjects and in order not to hinder the development of the documentaries, the Videoland Academy will only announce the subjects of the True Crime productions at a later stage.

The following makers have been selected by the Videoland Academy to further develop their documentary series:

  • Flynn von Kleist
  • Loretta van der Horst
  • Roel Leijten

The selected filmmakers meet for the first time on 28 January during a workshop at the IFFR. Here they will learn how they can best present their plan, including to producers they will encounter at a later stage during the Videoland Academy, to which they will be linked to realise their projects.

Videoland Academy wants to offer a new generation of filmmakers the opportunity to develop and gain experience within professional practice. The Videoland Academy offers a platform for this for the next three years. Videoland Academy is supported by the Dutch Film Fund and is in collaboration with the NFF, IDFA, IFFR and Dr. Script.
